“Like Water for Chocolate” is a captivating new Christopher Wheeldon ballet recently premiered at the American Ballet Theatre. Inspired by Laura Esquivel’s beloved novel and subsequent film, this three-act production masterfully depicts the heart-wrenching love story of Tita and Pedro, portrayed brilliantly by Cassandra Trenary and Herman Cornejo. Set against the backdrop of Old Mexico’s landscapes, mysticism, and traditions, the ballet takes the audience on an emotional journey from the protagonists’ childhood until their final moments.

The fusion of lyrical dances and energetic ensemble sequences, complemented by Broadway-style scenery and costumes, creates a sensory delight. The seamless transitions through different time periods and locations, often centered around Tita’s kitchen table and culinary sorcery, add depth and authenticity to the storytelling.

The integration of music and dance is flawless, intensifying the emotional impact of each scene. The inclusion of Mexican musical motifs and indigenous instruments enhances the cultural richness of the production, adding a new dimension to the lush world of Esquivel’s book.

Trenary’s graceful and emotive movements convey Tita’s anguish and despair, while Cornejo’s powerful presence embodies Pedro’s longing and torment. Their performances create moments of pure magic, particularly in the breathtaking final pas de deux.
