On October 7, three Tuscan wine consortia brought their wines to Manhattan with MareMMMa: The Other Side of Tuscany, a walk-around tasting and seminar for wine professionals and members of the press. It was held at Manhatta, the restaurant on the 60th floor of 28 Liberty Street in Lower Manhattan. The participating groups were the Consorzio Tutela Vini della Maremma Toscana, the Consorzio Tutela Morellino di Scansano and the Consorzio Tutela Vini Montecucco.
The event’s name is a nod to the partnership: the three Ms stand for Maremma Toscana, Montecucco and Morellino di Scansano. The same consortia stage MareMMMa in Alberese, near Grosseto, where this year’s seventh edition in March presented 582 wines from 113 producers.
The three denominations share a region but not an identity. Maremma Toscana DOC is the broadest, covering the entire province of Grosseto and a range of grapes. Sangiovese anchors the reds, while Vermentino, now close to a third of production, leads the whites. Morellino di Scansano, a DOCG since 2007, is built on Sangiovese (known locally as Morellino), with a minimum of 85 percent. Montecucco, inland and adjacent to Montalcino, received DOCG status for its Sangiovese in 2011, with a 90 percent minimum. The broader Montecucco DOC also covers white and rosé wines.
Producers from all three denominations poured, giving trade and press the chance to taste and also speak directly with the people behind the wines.
