A Taste of European Cruising: Discovering Mein Schiff 1

Relaxed elegance, German hospitality and a premium all-inclusive philosophy offer a different perspective on cruising.

For the past decade or so, as we have cruised around the world and visited ports in different countries, we have often spotted ships bearing a distinctive name: Mein Schiff. The vessels belong to TUI Cruises, a German cruise company whose ships seem to inspire a particularly loyal following.

We often asked passengers coming ashore what they thought of their experience. The responses were remarkably consistent. They loved sailing with Mein Schiff and, in many cases, told us they would choose no other cruise line.

Naturally, we became curious. What was it about these ships that inspired such loyalty?

So imagine our pleasure when TUI Cruises invited us, along with several other travel journalists, to tour the Mein Schiff 1 during a port call in Bayonne, New Jersey, and enjoy lunch on board. It was an opportunity to finally explore a ship we had viewed from afar.

First Impressions: Understated European Elegance

During our visit, most of the passengers were away exploring NYC, so we had the entire vessel to ourselves. The ship’s general manager and members of her team welcomed us and personally guided us through its public spaces, accommodations, and restaurants.

Commissioned in 2018, the Mein Schiff 1 accommodates up to 2,894 passengers. It is a midsize ship, yet our first impression was not of its size but of its inviting, understated elegance.

Understated Decor

The interiors are contemporary and comfortable, with a distinctly European flair. Rather than elaborate appointments and conspicuous luxury, the interior design emphasizes light, open spaces and welcoming furnishings.

A particularly attractive feature is the central atrium, with its striking suspended art installation. Throughout the ship, the overall effect is understated and not pretentious — a place where guests can relax, socialize and feel at home.

If you would like a closer look, TUI Cruises offers an official virtual tour of Mein Schiff 1, along with deck plans that make it easy to explore the ship’s layout.

Casual by Design

If you enjoy dressing up for formal evenings, wearing your finest clothes for a captain’s dinner and making a special occasion of the evening dress code, Mein Schiff’s relaxed approach may take some getting used to.

The atmosphere on board is casual and unpretentious. The emphasis is on comfort rather than elaborate dress, making it easy for passengers to move from a day of exploring a destination to dinner without feeling obliged to change into formal attire.

This relaxed philosophy extends to the ship’s public spaces. There are comfortable places to sit, socialize, read or simply watch the sea. The design is intended to make everyday life on board pleasant rather than turn every moment into a grand occasion.

For travelers who prefer a resort-style holiday with a European flavor, that can be an important part of the attraction.

Cabins That Feel Like a Retreat

During our tour, we visited several accommodation categories, ranging from an inside cabin, to a balcony room, and a suite.

We found the guestrooms are comfortably proportioned, with practical layouts and an appealing contemporary look. Compared with some of the utalitarian cabins we have encountered on other ships, these appeared particularly spacious.

The accommodations are designed with everyday comfort in mind. Top amenities we observed included bathrobes, slippers and Nespresso machines, along with the usual expected conveniences. Our tour also gave us a glimpse of the generous space and additional privileges available in the suites.

The cruise line’s official cabins and suites guide provides further details about the available accommodations and suite benefits.

A Ship for Active Travelers, Too

Although our visit focused on the ship’s interiors, accommodations, and dining, Mein Schiff 1 also offers plenty for guests who prefer an active holiday.

One feature that caught our attention was the long outdoor swimming pool, which is designed to allow passengers to swim laps rather than simply splash around or cool off between sunbathing sessions.

The ship also has extensive fitness and wellness facilities, including a large, well-equipped gym, a full-size sports court, spacious outdoor areas and a running track. The sports court provides additional opportunities for activities such as dance and fitness classes. In addition there are art classes in a fully equipped studio, spa services and much more. A 1,000 seat theater, a smaller performance venue, and a disco/night club complete the entertainment scene.

Some unique services include a dedicated barber shop for men and a tattoo studio for those who wish to take home some ink memories from their voyage.

The Appeal of Premium All-Inclusive Cruising

One of the important distinctions between Mein Schiff and other cruise lines is its premium all-inclusive philosophy.

Much of what passengers generally enjoy on board is included in the cruise fare, from a selection of dining options, to beverages, entertainment, and fitness facilities. TUI Cruises advertises more than 100 brand-name drinks among its inclusive offerings, although premium offerings, specialty restaurants and exclusive bars involve additional charges.

We were particularly impressed with the variety of dining venues and the range of food and beverage options. The ship has 12 restaurants and bistros, as well as 17 bars and lounges, offering choices for different tastes and occasions.

Some exclusive restaurants and services are associated with particular suite categories, while others require an additional payment. The details vary by venue and package.

Dining with a European Accent

Our lunch on board was one of the highlights of our visit.

We were offered a varied menu featuring traditional German dishes and international offerings. We selected to start with a trio of soups: tomato, onion, and beef consommé. Each was delicious, providing a flavorful introduction to the meal.

Three Soups

For our main course, we ordered the Wiener Schnitzel, a thin, breaded veal cutlet accompanied by cranberry compote and German potato salad. It was a satisfying, traditional dish that immediately conveyed a sense of place. The menu also featured seafood, fish, and meat dishes, creatively prepared and presented, followed by a selection of sumptuous desserts.

And then there was the bread…

The dark, extra-crusty loaf we tasted (and got to take home as a parting gift), was memorable with its hearty texture and character. We were told that the flour and other ingredients are brought from Germany to help recreate the authentic bread that is such an important part of the country’s culinary heritage.

It was a fitting accompaniment to a meal that celebrated familiar European flavors.

Of course, the ship offers much more than German specialties. Its dining program includes international choices, with everything from classic and Mediterranean cuisine to seafood and other international selections. Guests can choose from casual dining venues or opt for more exclusive dining options when they want to make a special occasion of a meal.

For us, the important point was that the food we sampled was well prepared and satisfying. It reinforced the impression that this is a cruise line comfortable with its European identity, rather than one attempting to imitate an American resort at sea.

A European Cruise Experience, from Language to Lifestyle

There is one important consideration for Americans contemplating a Mein Schiff cruise: the ship’s European identity is genuine, and German is its principal onboard language.

Announcements, menus and much of the onboard programming reflect that orientation, although English-language information and assistance are available. During our visit, we found the senior crew was bilingual, and the service personnel we encountered spoke perfect English. Some activities and announcements are offered in both German and English.

Still, travelers should not assume that every aspect of the experience will operate exactly as it would on an American cruise line. The onboard atmosphere is shaped by a predominantly European clientele, with German-speaking guests particularly prominent.

For those who enjoy experiencing another culture while traveling, this can be part of the appeal. You are not simply visiting a series of destinations; you are also experiencing a different culture.

The same applies to the food. Guests can look forward to freshly baked croissants, German crusty bread and pastries, European cheeses, cold cuts, sausages and traditional dishes alongside other international choices. For anyone who appreciates these flavors, breakfast alone could be a pleasure.

On the other hand, if you depend on particular American brands, such as Starbucks, or poolside fare like Nathan’s hot dogs, and expect an entirely English-speaking environment from morning until night, you may want to consider whether this is the right cruise experience for you.

Neither approach is inherently better. They simply offer different kinds of holidays, and knowing what to expect can make all the difference.

Where Does Mein Schiff Sail?

The Mein Schiff fleet of 9 ships operates sailings in a variety of regions, with destinations changing according to the season and individual ship schedules. Travelers may find itineraries in the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, Northern Europe and most of all other popular regions.

That flexibility makes the line worth investigating for travelers who want to combine a European onboard experience with destinations they already know — or places they have always wanted to visit.

You can check current itineraries and departure dates through the official Mein Schiff website, where the company publishes its cruise offerings.

Is Mein Schiff Right for You?

Our visit to Mein Schiff 1 left us with a much clearer understanding of why the line has such a loyal following among European travelers.

We did not sail on this visit, so we cannot claim to have experienced a full cruise or judge every aspect of life onboard. What we did see was an elegantly designed ship, comfortable accommodations, appealing public spaces and a dining experience that gave us a taste of its European character.

We came away believing that Mein Schiff deserves consideration from American travelers who are curious about trying something a little different.

If you enjoy European culture, appreciate good food, prefer relaxed elegance to formal ceremony and like the idea of an all-inclusive approach to cruising, this could be an appealing alternative to the cruise experiences with which you are already familiar.

If, however, your ideal holiday depends on a thoroughly American onboard atmosphere, familiar brands at every turn and English as the unquestioned language of every activity, you may prefer a cruise line more closely tailored to those expectations.

For us, the pleasure of travel lies partly in discovering something new. After years of seeing Mein Schiff vessels in ports around the world and hearing enthusiastic reports from their passengers, we were delighted to finally step aboard one ourselves, even for only a few hours.

The tour answered many of our questions — and left us interested in learning more. Perhaps, one day, we will have the opportunity to experience a full voyage and discover firsthand what has inspired so many passengers to return again and again.
