Edith Halpert and the Rise of American Art, at the Jewish Museum

The Jewish Museum presents Edith Halpert and the Rise of American Art, from October 18 thru February 9, 2020.

Edith Halpert (1900-1970) was one of New York’s first female art dealers and the founder of the Downtown Gallery in New York City. She was an influential pioneer on the American Art scene. Some of the artists that Halpert supported, such as Stuart Davis, Jacob Lawrence, Georgia O’Keeffe, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Ben Shahn, and Charles Sheeler, became American icons.

Halpert also promoted nineteenth-century American artists, such as William Michael Harnett, Edward Hicks, and Raphaelle Peale, as well as little-known and anonymous folk artists.

The show features a selection of 100 works that were exhibited and sold through the Downtown Gallery along with Halpert’s acclaimed personal collection that was reassembled here for the first time since its sale in 1973.
