The Art Show’s 35th edition, November 2023

The Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA) has announced the programming for the 35th rendition of The Art Show. The fair, established in 1989, was designed to showcase notable galleries in the country, presenting carefully curated exhibitions of both historical and contemporary pieces. The fair donates its admission proceeds to the Henry Street Settlement, a social service organization assisting New Yorkers—having raised $36 million thus far. As it marks the 130th anniversary of the Settlement, the 2023 edition will be held at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City from November 2-5, with the annual Benefit Preview on Wednesday, November 1.

This year, ADAA strengthens its partnership with Henry Street Settlement by co-organizing a unique exhibition featuring artist Kate Capshaw at the Dale Jones Burch Neighborhood Center on the Lower East Side. Capshaw, recognized for her Unaccompanied series that seeks to draw attention to unhoused youth, will expand on her original series, producing two fresh oil-based portraits. One illustrates individuals who have positively impacted by the Settlement’s programs, while the other will showcase a portrait of a Settlement staff member who has influenced the community. This initiative brings the Settlement’s charitable activities into the limelight. An enriching conversation with David Garza, the CEO and President of Henry Street Settlement, is scheduled for Saturday, November 4. Here, Capshaw will delve into these latest creations and the critical role of the Settlement in aiding New Yorkers through education, employment, shelter, and arts programs.

Maureen Bray, the ADAA Executive Director, stated, “We’re enthusiastic about reinforcing our bond with Henry Street Settlement and emphasizing the mission of this crucial organization in our programming for The Art Show. The extensive programs this year showcase a variety of perspectives and creative energy that define The Art Show’s unique character.”

Diverse events are lined up for every day of the fair. These include a dialogue between gallery owner turned artist Joel Mesler and his Rabbi, moderated by The Jewish Museum’s Leon Levy Associate Curator Shira Backer, focusing on Mesler’s rabbinical portraits. Another discussion will be held between collector Komal Shah and curator Cecilia Alemani, discussing their respective approaches to supporting female artists. Additionally, “Meet the Artists”, a beloved program at The Art Show, will return on Sunday, November 5. This offers attendees the chance to interact with artists at the fair and specialists offering insights into prominent historical displays.

The ADAA has also organized its annual self-guided Upper East Side Gallery Walk for Saturday, November 4. Over 20 member galleries in the Park Avenue Armory vicinity will welcome the public, presenting some intriguing exhibitions in New York City at no cost.

For events at the Park Avenue Armory, though entry is included with fair admission, early registration is necessary and seating operates on a first come, first served basis. RSVP is essential.
