Big Apple Circus, the iconic NYC institution, launched its 42nd season in the big tent at Lincoln Center.
The new program offers a selection of acts ranging from a charming cats performance to death defying feats.
The opening night featured an appearance by Neil Patrick Harris as a Guest Ringmaster. The show’s official Ringmaster, the popular New York singer Storm Marrero, delighted the audience with her powerful voice and charming demeanor.
Some of the show’s highlights included:
- Jayson Dominguez, one of the only people in the world to successfully land a front somersault on top of a Wheel of Death.
- Dupla Mão na Roda (Hand To Hand), a strongman routine performed by Rafael Ferreira and Alan Pagnota in an act that celebrates the strength of the human body and spirit. The number is inspiring due to fact that Rafael was born with congenital arthrogryposis and is wheelchair bound.
- Circus Bingo Straps, an incredible aerial acrobatics act by Ukrainians Maryna Tkachenko and Tetyana Yudina who performed high in the air without a net.
- The Aliev Troupe concluded the program with a show stopping high-flying act that combines the Russian barre with trapeze style aerial acrobatics.
The show also featured a daring high wire act, acrobatic horseback riding, Chinese pole, inventive juggling and a cameo appearance of venerable circus scholar, Hovey Burgess.
Amy Gordon, an international performer and winner of a prestigious Olivier Award, appeared dressed in a bird’s suit and entertained the audience between acts.
