Guggenheim NY Debuts Gabriele Münter: Contours of a World

The Guggenheim New York presents Gabriele Münter: Contours of a World, the first dedicated U.S. museum exhibition on the German modernist in nearly thirty years. Now on view through April 26, 2026, the exhibition occupies Thannhauser 4 and Tower Levels 4 and 5 at the Guggenheim’s Fifth Avenue landmark.

The presentation presents Münter as a driving force in early modernism and a central figure within Der Blaue Reiter. More than fifty paintings and nineteen rarely seen photographs highlight her work from 1908 to 1920 and the later shifts that emerged during her time in Scandinavia during World War I.

Photographs Shown in the United States for the First Time

One of the most anticipated elements of the exhibition is the debut U.S. presentation of Münter’s early photographs. Taken with a No. 2 Bulls-Eye Kodak during her 1898–1900 travels through the southern and midwestern United States, the images capture daily life, family, and portrait studies. These photographs provide essential insight into her early experiments with composition, shadow, and perspective, revealing the foundations of the approach she later applied to painting.

Reframing Münter’s Role in Modernism

Curator Megan Fontanella notes that Münter’s inquisitive approach and international experiences helped shape her artistic perspective, positioning her as an artist whose influence extends across borders and movements. The exhibition places her work back in the larger context of German Expressionism and the transnational avant-garde.

An exhibition catalogue introduces updated scholarship, exploring how her early photographic work informs her expressive approach to color, line, and contour. Essays also examine her wartime years in Scandinavia—her most active period for exhibitions—and illuminate lesser-known works across genres including portraiture, landscape, and still life.
