Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre showcased the world premiere of “Habit Formed,” at the BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center on March 1st and 2nd, 2024. The performance offered an evening of exploration into the intricacies of habit formation.
“Habit Formed,” marking the company’s 24th Annual Performance Season, delves into the complex tapestry of habits that shape human existence. From the strength and freedom they offer to the boundaries and afflictions they impose, habits often control our lives. Through a fusion of fluid movements and sharp gestures, the ensemble of ten dancers will traverse the spectrum of emotions associated with habitual actions, from euphoria to restlessness to liberation.
The piece, conceived under the direction of Amanda Selwyn, is set against a backdrop of shifting physical structures—cages, netting, and rocks—symbolizing the delicate balance between growth potential and entrapment inherent in habitual behaviors. As the dancers navigate this terrain, they challenge established patterns, embarking on solo journeys of self-discovery that blur the lines between conformity and individuality.
Drawing inspiration from Gretchen Rubin’s insight that habits are the invisible architecture of everyday life, “Habit Formed” aims to illuminate the transformative power of intentional habits while exploring the pitfalls of those that bind us. With scenic design by Rob Dutiel and Anna-Alisa Belous, costume design by Anna-Alisa Belouw, lighting design by Dan Ozminkowski, and sound design by Joel Wilhelmi, the production promises to be a multi-sensory feast for the audience.
“Habit Formed” was developed with the support of a 2023-24 CUNY Dance Initiative Residency at The BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center. As a longstanding beacon of artistic expression in lower Manhattan, BMCC Tribeca PAC is dedicated to fostering a diverse range of talent and engaging audiences of all ages with high-quality performances across various disciplines.
